Hanukkah 2013: Wish List

A few weeks ago, the boyfriend asked me to explain Hanukkah to him. So I began telling the story of the Maccabees and their win over the Syrian Greeks. I told him about how once the Maccabees had regained control they returned to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem to purify the temple by burning the ritual oil in the menorah for eight days. And, I told him how they only had enough oil for one day but were surprised to find the oil lasted the full eight days.

And, at some point during this story, I was corrected, he just wanted to know what he was on the hook for.

So I started thinking about Hanukkah. And of course, what I actually wanted. It seems that this year may be the first year I don't have this long running list of things I'm dying for, or in most cases one large thing I've been lusting after all year. Thinking of a list was very difficult. And thinking of 8 things. Even harder. But, when there's a will, there's a way.

Happy Thanksgiving

[via]

Last year, I gave you 31 reasons why I was thankful that year. And, a year later, as I look back at them, I realize how stinking lucky I am: To live a wonderful, healthy and happy life, filled with people who make it that much more special. And that all those things, and now more, still ring true today.

As I mentioned last week, I'm off to St Maarten with the family today. I'll be soaking up the sun and basking in relaxation, And for that, I am also very very thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Link Love

As I said on Wednesday, I may not be blogging as much over the next few weeks, but I'm certainly still reading through my lengthy blogroll. Seriously, its length: 54, and growing!

[via]

So of course, I'm bringing some Link Love to you today.

+ Holiday Gift Guides are out and these make shopping for the holidays so much easier - one // two // three //

+ The EveryGirl launched their very own shop, If I had room on my walls, or one less cell phone cover, I'd be scooping it all up. Congrats girls!

+ While we're on that topic, two of my clients made their own very big announcements this week - one // two //

+ Tidy Tips from Caitlin + Caitlin, because not even their rooms are always perfect clean and styled for a photo shoot

+ I know I already shared these digs back in October, but Glitter Guide has even more insight into the ladies behind and the offices Sugar Paper.

+ I just about DIED when I saw this, a little boy cuddling/napping with his puppy brother. I seriously recommend you follow this mom on Instagram.

+ This one, I shared with my company: 10 ways to become a better worker TODAY. You can always count on Forbes for stuff like this.

+ Mark this as another one for SOMEDAY. Someday, I'd really like a Moroccan Wedding Blanket, and check out how these ladies styled theirs.

A Confession

I'm confessing a lot of things today.

Like the fact I love eating peanut butter straight from the jar.

Or love the taste of Bananas and Sour Cream.

But mostly, I'm confessing that life these days is pretty good.

  • The Holidays are approaching, and we're decorating the apartment TONIGHT
  • The roommates are fantastic as always.
  • My two best-est friends from college both are living and working in this fair city of mine, one of which living directly across the street.
  • I have this pretty fantastic boyfriend, who sends flowers just because.
  • I'm healthy, I'm happy, I'm working on getting fit for the thousandth time but I'm enjoying the process
  • Work is crazy busy. It's exciting and challenging at the same time and once again, I feel as though I am making the positive changes, especially to the inconsistencies that bothered me before.
  • And, did I mention I'm off to St. Maarten a week from today?
And then there's this blog of mine.

I'm starting to have a love-hate relationship with it.

  • One the one hand, I do love
    • how it's because a respite from the rest of the day that immediately takes my mind away from things. Like case-and-point, when I sat down to write this post last night, I was in a fit girly overanalyzing life craziness venting to my best friend and now, instead my mind is focused on this.
    • how this place has begun a spot for inspiration, to share what I love and keep things for safe keeping for a later date in time
    • how I can keep up with family even though I'm a half a country away and yet they always seem to know what's on my mind and going on in my world
    • how sometimes the most perfect acquaintance will tell me how much they love reading my blog, that makes my day
  • But on the other hand, I hate
    • The time it take each day, when sometimes all I want to do is stare into space
    • The frustration of no comments day after day after day
    • Wondering, is anybody even reading this?
So, I've decided I'm giving myself a break this holiday season and won't be sticking to my whole 5 posts a week schedule. Instead, I'm going to blog when I'm feeling inspired and when I have something to share, and hopefully rack up some fun posts in the downtime.

So keep checking back, and keep reading, and keeping telling me you're reading.

And if you're feeling really lovely, leave a comment, or 2, or 12.

Apartment LOVE: Catherine Kwong

Remember a few weeks back I mentioned that Rue Magazine really killed it in their latest edition? Well the feature with 7 young designers and their homes was what I was talking about.

And today, I'm sharing one of these: Catherine Kwong.

Catherine's home was a 70s dream that she was able to strip down to its bones and make into a 2010s dream. Starting with her inspiration from a certain J.Crew President and Creative Director I tend to talk about often's Brooklyn Brownstone, which was published in an old Domino Magazine. [p.s. It's back and I totally called it and I totally love it.] We're talking about Jenna Lyons.

She called Lyons' home, "the townhouse that launched a thousand remodels...it spoke to me because it's so beautifully balanced, with vintage elements but a decidedly modern look - glamorous but comfortable." And Catherine put a California spin on this for her home.

As she says, "Homes are not the same as showrooms. They should invite you in and put you at ease."

This week...

+ I'm kicking butt with working out everyday and eating healthy. Hey, I even worked out on Saturday! I have 3 sessions planned with the trainer, and two yoga classes on the books. Let's see if I can pull this off.

+ I'm kind of having the shopping itch. J.Crew's newest additions: KILLING it. This sweater. and this one too. These cashmere waffle leggings, I die. This peasant top. Some flannel (one / two). This graphic tee and this polka-dot striped number. And this skirt too. I'm also really liking these new balance sneaks. And last but not least, I mayyyy be buying this jacket.

+ Don't worry, I already bought these trays in all three colors and these amazing winter boots.

+ I'm also planning on hitting up Anthropologie

+ Is my office party. We're having pizza, salads, sliders and apps plus beer, wine and cocktails. Can you believe it's already time of office and holiday parties? And hanukkah, and thanksgiving? Before we know it it will be christmas and new years!

+ This can all only mean that it's now socially acceptable for me to rehang my holiday decorations. Feel free to judge, I don't care.

+ And I'll probably listening to celebrity versions of holiday songs, my favorite!

Currently -
Listening: Celebrity versions of Holiday Songs, duh. Or Passenger, Let Go. My new favorite song.
Eating: Healthy.
Drinking: La Croix Lime
Wanting: See above.
Needing: Caffeine and puppy cuddling
Thinking: about my weeks meal plan
Enjoying: the thought that I will be in St. Maarten in 1 week and 2 days.
Wondering: How time flies?

On Trend: Bar Cart

Yes, everyone and their mother has been showing off and styling their bar carts recently. You know, Bottle of St. Germain, Bombay Sapphire, Chambord and maybe a bottle of Veuve. St. Pellegrino, Pretty Juices. Decorative glasses. Fun Straws.

Like the ones below.

My apartment doesn't have room for a bar cart. So, instead we have a bar shelf, which is currently needing a few more bottles of wine. Oops. But someday, I'll have one of these, or a fun Society Social number.

I'm moving into Anthropologie

So I may or may not have mentioned this but my best friend got a side job at Anthropologie. It made sense, I always made fun of her because all of her clothes were from there. Only because I was secretly jealous and always found the store a bit difficult to shop.

Well, it's gotten easier and the truth is, I could move into the store, I would.

And their newest additions are AMAZING.

Can't you smell it?

I've been re-watching Gilmore Girls from the beginning. Yes, I loved this show, and still do. Although I know I'm going to be upset that Rory didn't end up with Logan all over again.

Anyway: I did have a point here.

As I was watching the weather this morning: read SNOW. I was reminded by one of the very first episodes of the show when Lorelai first shares her love for snow, and I always agreed with her. There is something special about the first snow of the year.

Lorelai: Wait, close your eyes and breath. I smell snow.
Rory: Ah, it's that time of year.
Lorelai: Can't you smell it?
Rory: You know, it's like dogs and high-pitched noises. I think it's something only you can smell.
Lorelai: I love snow.
Rory: Really, I had no idea.
Lorelai: Everything's magical when it snows, everything looks pretty. The clothes are great. Coats, scarves, gloves, hats.
Rory: Thermal underwear, wool sucks, ear flaps.

Lorelai: Michel, it's the first snowfall of the season. It's very lucky! Make a wish!
Michel: Get away from me.
Lorelai: Oh, you're not supposed to say it out load. The world changes when it snows. It's quite. Everything softens.

Lorelai: I feel good. Tingly.
Rory: That's called frostbite.

p.s. I was always so envious of their banter skills.

Fall/Winter SALE

Today, the leaves were falling like CRAZY off the trees. It looked like rain coming down, only in beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow. Then last night, as I walked out of dinner, there was frost in the air. It felt cold, it smelled like cold.

And that, could all only mean one thing.

Fall Sales.

Also, it could mean one other thing. That it's November, and winter is on it's way, eventually. But I'm going to be soaking up every at bit of this brisk fall air, and loving every moment. But back to the sales...

J.Crew is offering 30% off all fall sale items using code: LOVEFALL, and 40% off to all card members using code: CARDMEMBERS. This edgy yet classic striped leather number is finally on sale, as is this cute oxford and plenty of shoes - I'm looking at you: one. two. three. four. five. six. seven. eight. I said PLENTY.

Madewell's got 20% off of all sweaters, and I'm thinking I want this one.

Nordstrom's Half Yearly Sale is going on now, and it's almost as good as their Annual Fall Sale. Only Almost. This dress, and this one too. This patterned top and color blocked collared tank. And this bow one too. This striped comfy top, some flower power, and a Vince Blouse. And I'm digging 4 different pairs of shoes: 1 2 3 4. Have you noticed I love shoes?

Lastly, Shopbop's got 30% off of Fall Items for 2 days only so get on it, ladies and gents. I'm digging this Rebecca Minkoff Dress, this Moto Jacket, this sweater necessary for Winter, and of course some Eberjey PJs.

And while we're on the shopping talk, this perfume came into my Birchbox last month and I need it.

On Trend: Parsons Desks

The Parsons Desk is a modernist square or rectangular table whose four, flush square legs are equal in thickness to the top.

And, they make for a whole lot of Office Envy.

p.s. This may not be clear from all these photos below, but this guy does come in other colors.
