Apartment LOVE: Emily Schuman

I know you'll be shocked but the most exciting thing about this blog post is not that it's about one of my all time favorite bloggers. What I'm most excited about, and you can imagine this blog series is  even more so excited about, is that Style Me Pretty has launched a new site dedicated just to interiors!

And that is where Emily Schuman's home comes to us from.

4.29.13

This week...is going to be a great one.

+ The weather here in Chicago is supposed to be beautiful today, tomorrow and Wednesday. 70s and sunshine. I'm just hoping my bedroom doesn't get too hot, it's all windows and my building hasn't switched on the A/C yet.

+ I'm starting a 3 week challenge with my trainer. The goal, to loose a minimum of 4 pounds and 3% body fat. The plan, working out 6 days a week and having four of the six being high intensity interval training and two of the six being weight training. My trainer made all the HIIT work outs for me, they look pretty terrifying.

+ I'm in search of a new salad place. Our regular spot, Leafy Greens, closed this weekend. They were perfect for make your own salad, I mean huge salads, fresh chicken, salmon and tuna, gracious hands when adding ingredients, and all different kinds of soup. We're kind of devastated. Anyone have any replacement suggestions for us? Looking in the East Lincoln Park area.

+ I said I was going to do something last week and didn't do it. I didn't buy new music yet. But I'm going to do it this week. Got any suggestions?

+ It's the return of event season and I have two this week: Drop Media Preview Party and the New Odyssey Corporate Showcase.

+ This coming weekend is going to be filled with plenty of activities: Lymphoma Research Fund's Derby Party and a friends birthday party in the bleechers at Sunday's cubs game.

+ P.S. If you don't yet have plans for Derby, you should check out my client's, Chicago q, awesome party. Tickets are still available. [I know, shameless plug]

+ I'm going to look to see if I can somewhere find a fascinator before Saturday. Any suggestions? I'd love one like a Philip Treacy.

Have a good week everyone!

Thinking: about what to get Barb for mother's day, other than me coming home of course :)

One Day

The other night, my roommate and I were watching Garden State. Her for the first time. Me for what seems like the millionth time. But now as an "adult" living halfway across the country from the place I once called home and my family I still call family, Zach Braff's words, I'm sure you know which ones I'm referring to, struck me in a different way than they used to. So I'm sharing them with you today, on this beautiful Friday morning.

You know that point in your life when you realize the house you grew up in isn't really your home anymore? All of the sudden even though you have some place where you put all your shit, that idea of home is gone. You'll see one day and it's gone. You feel like you can never get it back. It's like you feel homesick for a place that doesn't even exist. Maybe it's like a rite of passage, you know. You won't ever have this feeling again until you create a new idea of home for yourself, you know for your kids, for the family you start. It's like a cycle or something. I don't know but I miss the idea of it, you know. Maybe that's all family really is. A group of people that miss the same imaginary place.

Watching Garden State the other day, I realized I may have hit that one day.

"The Devil Wears J.Crew"

In their most recent issue, Fast Company Magazine did a profile on one of my favorite brands, J.Crew (surprise, surprise), and the woman holding the reins there, Jenna Lyons.

And I swear, it's written like a poem.

"Jenna Lyons is in her corner office
sucking on an iced coffee as if it were manna.
The room looks like a cross between a boudoir and an artist's loft, with a peach fur draped over a white leather eames chair.
The industrial windows stretch up and up, like Lyons's legs, which are punctuated by a pair of metallic, sparkled 3-inch stilettos."

And it gives me more and more reasons to love her:

On her 10-day cleanse, "I'm a little bit mangry. Hangry mangry," Lyons says.

On her look, "a high-low look that reflects her own boy-girl style--androgyny with some sequins and a dash of nerdy glasses"

On how she's just like me, "she looks like a model and then she talks like the best salesperson you've ever met"...kidding about how she's just like me!

On her approach at J.Crew, ",,,make and sell only what they love. The love would not be unconditional; they would adjust their product line always, trying new ideas, assessing and quickly getting rid of anything that didn't work. J.Crew would become a company of constant and freewheeling experimentation, iteration, adaptation."

On J.Crew employees, "J.Crew employees reveal themselves by the nakedness of their ankles. It's as if the company's uniform, ambiently dictated by Lyons, is enforced only from the knees down. Bare ankles, for men and women alike, whether with suede bucks, ballet flats, heeled ankle boots, high-top Converse, vintage Nikes, or glittery pumps, fill the company's East Village headquarters."

On beauty, "when something isn't as beautiful as it can be, the reason is always bigger than the thing," says Lyons.

On issues of struggling with her looks, "I searched for ways to make things more beautiful and surrounded myself with beautiful things because I didn't feel that in myself. I felt a huge drive to make clothes that everybody could have because I felt ostracized by the world of beauty and fashion," she says.

On Jenna, "Jenna leads by example. She'll be wearing an oversize men's cashmere sweather and a maxi skirt with feathers. If you described it to a famous fashion person, it would sound ridiculous. But it's liberating for everyone who works for her."

Read the full article here. And check out Jenna's poetic office here.

You know what they say about 'em, they bring May flowers. And I really hope the adage is true. It's been a VERY rainy April. It's been beautiful day followed by not so beautiful dayS followed by a beautiful day followed by not so beautiful dayS followed by...you get it. It's been raining a lot. And, it better bring May flowers. And they better look like this:

1. it's in my city
2. it's adorable
3. it reflects the same style she shares on her blog, Where the Sidewalk Begins

4.22.13

[via]

I'm hoping this week is going to be a normal one, cause last week certainly was not. At all. However, I'm glad that that's all over now. I'm glad everyone's safe and sound, and those who were injured are recovering. While we may move on from last week, I know we'll never forget the events of last week. I certainly won't.

This week...

+ I'm going to start running again. I had to take off last week because I completely lost my voice. Yes, friends, I'm starting to love it too. I've finally discovered what they mean when they say runner's high. The feeling afterwards, it's the greatest.

+ Speaking of running, I'm going to download some new music, it's been awhile and I could use a GOOD running playlist. Got any suggestions of songs? Requirements: a good beat and great lyrics

+ I'm also making my trainer do another equifit. We tend to do them monthly to see my progress, I think by Friday I'll be feeling good about this one, just not right now seeing as this weekend wasn't GREAT

+ I'm cleaning out my make up. I read last week that 75% of women don't clean out their eye make up making them more susceptible to eye infections. And I'm as guilty as the rest of them. SO I've decided I'm going to clean it alllll out and get rid of all my old mascaras and eyeliners. And by the way, there's nothing better than new mascara.

+ Work's going to be crazy. One of my coworkers gave notice last week so I've taken on a few more clients...and a few more projects. I even have an opening this week.

+ My best friend from college is coming to visit from Nashville and I'm VERY excited. BONUS: I'm going to get to show her around Chicago making her job application process easier because she's planning on moving here this fall!

+ I'm thinking of treating myself to a massage...and while I'm there, I'm going to look into airbrush tanning. One of my co-workers and maybe an episode of Kourtney & Kim Take Miami has kind of convinced me that my pale skin may really like it...that and I've decided I'm going to be a sun screen person this summer

+ I'm finally going to start reading a new book, most likely Mansfield Park, I know I said I was going to do that a few weeks ago and have been procrastinating

+ I may or may not have the shopping bug...okay I have it. It's dangerous.

Listening: Ben Lee, it came on in Walgreen's yesterday, forgot how much I love him
Eating: I picked up a Michael's Salad in Highland Park yesterday :)
Drinking: Water and the Mighty Leaf Tea I stole from the Standard Club last week
Feeling: a little overwhelmed for a Monday morning, this weekend felt like a VERY quick one without enough time to decompress from last week
Wanting: ...it to be a 4 day week, it's not
Needing: a good cuddle session...with Dunkin preferably, he's been cheating on me with the stuffed animal I bought him for his birthday
Thinking: About my to do list for the week, it is Monday after all
Enjoying: my hair...I got a cut and color last Friday!
Wondering: how my review is going to go this week, can't believe it's been a year since my last one

Stay Safe Beantown

I woke up to a text from my brother's girlfriend informing me she was not allowing my brother to leave the house, rather the couch, until all this is over. I cannot believe what is happening in my city, that my city seems as though its under seige. I hope everyone is staying safe.

Sending my love and prayers east...

They've done it again

They...being Target.

I've sung the praises of Target many of times. I think its because they kind of epitomize one of my biggest beliefs when it comes to style: its all about mixing and matching, colors and patterns, different styles and most importantly, high price items with budget finds. And, Target's great for the budget finds.

I read recently, possibly by the blogger that whose home I covered this week and last, that her technique to styling a home is a lot about the process and how it doesn't all have to come together at once. Which to a 24 year old with a limited budget this is pretty great advice. But also, I've found fun and great accent finds at stores like Target and Home Goods, World Market, Marshall's, Pier One and online shops like Joss & Main, One King's Lane and Gilt.

And now, I've finally checked out Threshold, Target's newest line. Below are my picks.

Apartment LOVE: Alaina Kaczmarski Part 2 of 2

As I hinted last week, this week I'm sharing Alaina Kaczmarski's new apartment. It's just as unreal as her old apartment. Maybe even better.

I cannot say enough how much I love this girls style.

The Kicker: She's moving out of this apartment this summer. If it wasn't in Buena Park, I'd offer to buy it right now, as is, with all the furniture and fixings in it. Yes that would include all of her stuff. Seriously.
